Families who are relocating to Botetourt County naturally are curious about the area’s schools. Our schools are the centers of the communities they serve, and we’re fortunate to have a high-quality school system that stacks up very well against others in the state.

I’ve put together some general information about Botetourt County Public Schools that I hope you’ll find helpful as you start investigating educational opportunities in Botetourt. Where you see data points, I’ve used the most recent data available as of this post. Be sure to check at the links provided for the most up-to-date information.

Enrollment

Since at least the 2016-17 school year, total enrollment has held pretty steady at between 4,600 and 4,700 for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in 11 schools. School enrollment is a moving target, of course, but we did see a slight increase from 2017-18 to 2018-19. I expect that to become a trend as we see more and more families moving into the county.

Student achievement

Overall, Botetourt County students have performed well compared with state averages.

  • More Botetourt County students scored Proficient in reading, writing, math, science and history than the state average.

  • A larger percentage of Botetourt County’s kindergartners met literacy benchmarks.

  • More seniors graduated with advanced diplomas.

STEM programs

The Botetourt County STEM-H Academy, a partnership between Botetourt County Schools and Virginia Western Community College, gives students distinctive opportunities to prepare for jobs in fields that are projected to see growth in overall numbers and wages. Students can take classes to earn an associate’s degree in one of three areas: pre-engineering, health occupations, and information systems technology.  And, with the growth of business in Botetourt, there are and will be many job opportunities close to home for our graduating students.
